How the conversion works
Pick the calendar your date is in from the tabs above the form, type the day, month and year and press Convert; the same day appears in the other two calendars, with its weekday, in the answer panel. The arithmetic runs in your browser and no date is sent to the server.
Jalali to Gregorian
The Jalali (Solar Hijri) calendar is a solar calendar, so a year has 365 or 366 days just as a Gregorian year does, and the conversion between the two always has one definite answer. The year begins at the vernal equinox, so 1 Farvardin usually falls on 21 March and moves by a day around leap years. This converter implements the standard algorithm and is exact for the years 1200 to 1500 Jalali.
Gregorian to Jalali
Choose "From Gregorian" and enter the date as it appears on a passport, an invoice or a foreign website. For birth dates, card expiry dates and official deadlines the answer matches the printed Iranian calendars.
Hijri dates
The Hijri calendar follows the moon, and its year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, which is why religious occasions move earlier through the Jalali calendar each year. The converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the one most software computes with. Iran's official calendar is announced on sighting the new moon and can differ from it by a day; for official occasions the national announcement is the authority.
Why is my year out of range?
Jalali years 1200 to 1500, Gregorian years 1800 to 2100 and Hijri years 1200 to 1500 are accepted; the algorithm's accuracy has been checked within those bounds, and outside them the answer may not agree with historical calendars.
